“wild beast in waiting” as I stood at my computer quietly engrossed in research on Black art, I think he must’ve seen my true form. Perhaps my tail was showing while I wasn’t paying attention, or he caught a glimmer of my scales. As I stood in my tailored suit adjusting my wings, he exclaimed loudly “One day Robert is going to punch me in the face.” One thing this incident affirmed for me is that despite a genial disposition and well-kept appearance, I am not immune to the projections of violence that have been historically cast upon Black people, especially Black men. This was one of many instances in my life where people - usually white people, often in professional settings - saw fit to see past their experience of me and decide that I was an avatar of their fears and prejudices. We’ve seen this play out in so many ways - sometimes with fatal consequences - over the course of our history as Americans, and especially during the pandemic years, that it hardly seems to surprise us. Even still, it is jarring whenever I am confronted with it in the news or my own life.
